A Great Grandma Pie in NJ - Krispy

Admittedly I am a pizza addict.  I could probably eat it ever day if I let myself!  A while back I posted about the different regional pizza styles and vowed to try them all.  Well grandma-style pizza can be best described as a thin-crust Sicilian.  It appears to have originated in Long Island and spread to the other boroughs of New York.  A friend who grew up in Brooklyn highly recommended Krispy Pizza to me.  They have their original pizza shop in Brooklyn and a newer shop in Old Bridge, NJ and they serve a fabulous grandma pie.  The crust which is cooked in an oiled pan was perfect.  The pie was topped with real fresh mozzarella - no imitation cheese here!  The sauce was light and tomatoey and the perfect amount of fresh basil was dusted across.  Oh my!  Maybe a trip to Chicago for deep dish next?!

  1. I've never heard of "grandma pizza" but I sure want to get more familiar with it after reading about it here. Looks like something I'd love to sink my teeth into. Next time you're in Princeton, drop me a line and we'll go to Bent Spoon together.

  2. Oh my this looks good. I think I will have to do a pizza tour in NYC/NJ. There are a few pizza joints in the Twin Cities that merit attention but I swear I could smell the aroma of these from the photos.

  3. That looks so good.I really loves its name. One of the few things we miss about the East coast is pizza. Our local stores can't make anything that tastes like the real thing. I hope you have a great day and are enjoying the summer. Are both girls home? Blessings...Mary

  5. These do look so good, I could easily order the big one and eat it all, with a few glasses of red wine and I would call it a perfect evening!

  6. Grandma-style pizza, huh? Well, I guess that fits me! :)
Two things make this pizza perfect: that thin crust and the use of fresh mozzarella.

  9. Seriously, you know more about pizza! We have a pizza restaurant right near us (we have like 20 right near us actually) and they make a grandma style pie. It is crispier crust and not too cheesy. Next time we are passing through Old Bridge...we will have to give it a try. How are you feeling?

  11. I haven't seen a square Grandmother's pie, but we order the round version here in our town (it doesn't look as good as that Krispy pie!).
We have so many great pizzerias in NJ.
