Favorite Chicken Sandwich

My girls are getting ready to head off to college so this week has been all about favorites.  They each made a list of favorite home cooked meals.  One favorite that made both of my daughter's lists is our family's favorite chicken sandwich.  This sandwich is inspired by one served at Frankie's Bar and Grill in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.  It is like a Cheers and is a favorite of locals.  There is a big open flame grill behind the large bar, and they serve some great burgers and sandwiches.

Our long time favorite is their grilled chicken sandwich.  Grilled chicken breast, melted muenster cheese, crisp bacon slices, lettuce, tomato slices, served on a hard roll with a side of mayo.  I like to add some sliced avocado, too - perfect!  This is one tasty sandwich!  Two must have ingredients are: really good hard rolls, which we are so lucky to have available in our area, and fresh summer tomatoes.  These particular hard rolls are from Colonial Bakery in Lavalette, NJ - so good!  A good quality bacon is essential also.  So simple, yet so delicious!

Did you know that a staple NJ breakfast is a hard roll with butter?  I don't partake too often because of the fat and calories but a good hard roll with butter is awesome.  It's apparently a New Jersey thing unheard of in other parts of the country.  I love NJ.

  2. What a great sandwich. Unfortunately we can't get hard rolls or a good tomato here in Phoenix. Not like those from NJ anyway.

  3. Hate to tell you this Jen, but the hard roll with butter is actually a New York thing. It was my breakfast on the run when I first started working in the city...a million years ago. My Dads bakery sold so many hard rolls on the weekends that they had baskets full of them lined up in the back. Now Taylor ham, or pork roll....that is New Jersey. Good luck getting the girls back to school...it isn't easy! Bring tissues.

  7. I have been in NJ longer than I have been in Texas...these people can be crazy!! But I have grown to love them! You know breakfast in Paris is a hard piece of bread with butter.....I guess new jerseyians can't be that bad!

  8. Considering most of Europe offers crusty bread with butter in their Bed and Breakfasts - I would say NJ is right on target. And your chicken sandwich? I think it's my favorite sandwich, too!

  10. The sandwich looks wonderful. I've never been able to put the hard roll and butter for breakfast aside. I use less butter these days, but I still enjoy my rolls when we have a Western style breakfast. I hope the girl's transition to college life goes well. Have a great day. Blessings...Mary

  12. The buttered hard roll originated in Europe, especially among Austrians and Germans. Since so many immigrants came from those countries to America via Ellis Island (which is in Jersey City waters) they naturally introduced this delicacy to New York AND New Jersey simultaneously.

  13. Hi,

Found your site through a search for "a hard roll with butter" which I rant about to the people here in florida. Growing up in NJ, it was my "walk to school breakfast" every day for years with a hot tea with milk. *sigh* How I MISS that! :) Thanks for the memory trip.....
